Feature in Advanced Photoshop Magazine

thursday, december 3rd, 2009

The awesome people at Advanced Photoshop covered me in their Insight column this month (issue 63, pages 42-43). The issue was available on newsstands in Europe through November and hits the States this month. I'm not exactly sure why they're a month ahead but I'd be willing to bet it has something to do with the Large Hadron Collider.

I'd like to know how you do your grain, it obviously isn't the usual PS noise... thanks, Dan

No problem, Dan. You're right that I'm not using traditional Photoshop noise, due to the fact that at any resolution beyond around 72dpi, it's simply too fine to be noticeable. All of my prints are 300dpi, so they require something a little heavier. Essentially, I create three layers (or so) of traditional noise, then scale them to various larger sizes. One of the layers might be left at the original size, while another is 2x, and another is 4x. I then blur each layer just enough to soften it, and boost the layers to make the texture a little more stark. I then blend each of those layers together. The result is a coarse, multi-resolution grain that looks just as good at web resolution as it does in print.
