"Imagine the apocalypse came and wiped out everything but chic people and hot design."

That's how Mozsary described his vision for the project. It's also one of the most awesome sentences in the history of the English language.

Surface Magazine's July/August 2010 issue focused on the intersection of design, fashion and transportation of all kinds. Chris Mozsary conatcted me a couple months prior to collaborate along with photographer Daniel Bernauer on an expansive feature based on my previous Pavement Loop series.

After batting some ideas around via phone and email, we set to work on Mozsary's vision of a "fashion-forward Blade Runner". The process began in NYC with Bernauer's immaculate photography, providing an almost surgically clean foundation for the delightfully excessive visual explorations to come.

The timeline wasn't what any of us would have liked, as is usually the case with these things, so I had to scale back some of my loftier visions of impossibly detailed deconstructions of a hyperstylized metropolis. This ended up working in our favor, however, especially given Mozsary's desire for elegant simplicity in the midst of the chaos.

I think the result strikes a pretty solid balance between those goals; my apparently insatiable thirst for disjointed urban landscapes was quenched, Bernauer's razor-sharp models took center stage, and Mozsary's story of dystopian-chic surface-dwellers was told.

Despite the crunched timeline (less than two weeks from start to finish if I recall), every detail seen in the final pieces is original. I did only minimal sketches for each environment before jumping directly into digital. All 3D models and textures were created specifically for the piece to ensure a unique, finely-tailored result.
